By all accounts this new and fresh sounding quartet is taking the Emerald Isles by storm. Previously calling themselves The Coonics, a local word for a gathering of holy men, the band decided to change direction in 2012 with a new name and a new sound.
That new sound is exemplified in their latest three song EP which is short, sweet, and to be blunt, fairly unremarkable.
The title track is two and half minutes of radio friendly pop. Like it or loathe it, the hypnotic melodies will have you unconsciously singing along and stupidly smiling while bopping your head from side to side.
Mumford & Sons inspired “Slow Burner” is slightly more interesting musically and lyrically with brief moments of glory.
“Teenage Love Convention”, the ballad, a nice song but nothing too terribly groundbreaking.
All three songs are fun with catchy lyrics heavy on simple rhyme, repetitive song structures, and catchy riffs, a popular formula for the style of music the band are going for.
Unfortunately this can sometimes backfire and become a popular formula for boring music.
While the band haven’t reached their musical potential, their popularity in their homeland indicated that Strange Boats are an emerging band and worth keeping an eye on.
