On this day in 2015, 1,000 Italian Foo Fighters fans come together to perform a cover of ‘Learn To Fly’ in hopes of convincing the band to perform in their city.
Back in December of 1997, the Foo Fighters descended upon Cesena, an Italian city of just under 100,000 people. Following the completion of the concert, the band would return to Italy several more times, but they rarely played outside Milan.
In 2015, Fabrio Zaffanini decided it had been too long between drinks and assembled the Rockin’ 1000, a group who would come together to perform a Foo Fighters track in hopes of luring the band back to their city.
On July 26th, the 1,000 person band set up shop in field just outside of the city to perform a rousing rendition of the Foo Fighters’ 1999 track ‘Learn To Fly’. After a full day of filming – and a few more for editing – the clip is posted online with a plea to the group, where it goes viral almost immediately.
Within hours, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl acknowledges the video, and releases a video in Italian the next day where he announces that the band are coming back to Cesena.
Later that year, on November 3rd, the group do indeed hit up Cesena to perform a show. Opening with ‘Learn To Fly’, the band’s set is extremely well-received, and even features a collaboration from the video’s ‘Mohawk Guy’, who joins the band to cover Queen & David Bowie’s ‘Under Pressure’.
