It’s been a few years since we last saw Outkast together, but fans have been left hoping for a reunion following a socials post in honour of Big Boi’s son graduating from high school.
Back in 2000, Outkast reached worldwide prominence with their infectious single ‘Ms. Jackson’.
The second single from their Stankonia album, the tune also contained the memorable line from André 3000; “I will be present on the first day of school/And graduation.” Now, almost 20 years later, the hip-hop icon has kept this promise of sorts.
Taking to Instagram yesterday, Outkast member Big Boi shared an image of himself with André 3000 and son Cross in honour of the latter’s graduation from high school.
“Congrats Son ! Cross “The Boss” Patton ! Oregon here we come !” Big Boi wrote on Instagram in honour of Cross’ graduation from Atlanta’s Woodward Academy.
“It’s been 1 hell of a journey, raising 3 Kids, private school to College Degrees,” he added in another post. “Never woulda thought this Rap Shit would have brought me here.”
While the experience is undoubtedly a huge experience for Big Boi and his son (with Cross reportedly receiving a blue Tesla for his graduation present), fans of Outkast have hit up the Instagram comments section wondering if the reunion between Big Boi and André 3000 is in the works.
As it stands, Outkast’s last album was Idlewild, released back in 2006. While the group haven’t officially broken up as such, the pair have been off doing their own thing, with a large-scale reunion taking place back in 2014.
Since then, no headline performances by Outkast have been plotted, nor has a new album been teased. However, Big Boi and André 3000 have performed together since, including an appearance in 2016 at Atlanta’s OneMusicFest.
Speaking to Complex in 2017, André 3000 said fans shouldn’t hold their breath for another reunion.
“It’s really just an excitement thing, and where I am in life,” André 3000 explained. “I kind of like not being a part of [rap] now that I’ve done it.”
“As I get older, I start to see myself move more back from it — the hustle and bustle of putting out an album, the pressure of being in the studio trying to come up with something. Now it’s more like a hobby for me, so I don’t think about it in that way.”
“Even with Outkast — if we never do another album, I’m totally fine with that.”
