A troupe of the finest names in music have joined forces the raise funds for the New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Foundation. Dave Grohl, Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Dave Matthews, Irma Thomas and Nathaniel Rateliff have collaborated on a joyous cover of ‘When The Saints Go Marching In.’

The performance was part of the ‘Round Midnight Preserves Livestream benefit, hosted by New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band. It saw the Foo Fighters and Beatles legends swap out their usual instruments for an uncanny weapon of choice: Grohl rocked out on the tambourine, whilst McCartney played trumpet.

As well as cracking off a performance of ‘When The Saints Go Marching In’, Grohl took part in a duet with legendary Preservation Hall clarinetist, saxophonist and flautist Charlie Gabriel on New Orleans classic anthem ‘Come with Me’, as well as performing a solo acoustic version of ‘Best of You’.

In addition to his performance, Grohl took part in an interview that saw him delve into his experience recording Foo Fighters’ Sonic Highways track ‘In The Clear’ at Preservation Hall.

“I really was concerned. I did not want to just come in and dump the Foo Fighters on you,” Grohl revealed to the venues creative director Ben Jaffe. “It was important to me that we respectfully found our place in that hall and did our thing. It was around long before we ever got there; it will be around long after … It was exciting in that experiment.”

The livestream also saw Arcade Fire share a new video of them performing ‘Wake Up’ with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band that at Karnaval 2020, a video that was shot in part by Spike Jonze.

This marks the second creative collaboration between Dave Grohl and Paul McCartney, who previously joined forces back in 2012 alongside Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear on the track ‘Cut Me Some Slack’, which featured on Grohl’s documentary film Sound City.
