The Scientists of Modern Music (TSOMM) released their debut album Electronic Sunset in 2008, and quickly established a well-respected rapport with Australian electronic music fans, playing Meredith, Falls, Pyramid Rock and Golden Plains Festivals.
With the release of their second LP A Personal Universe, the initial potential and present talent that was revealed in their first release has flourished into an even more carefully constructed and well thought out record. The band seem to have made a conscious effort to not fall into the second release trap of failing to develop, and have instead, managed to effectively show a diversity and growth, while maintaining their signature dark and edgy neon-pop that helped pioneer their initial appeal.
Across the 11 track LP the band manages to traverse just enough territory for the album to convey a sense that Cal Young and Simon Macintosh were not afraid to expand and experiment during the writing process. A sense of dedicated fine-tuning is also evident, turning a diverse collection of tracks into a well-oiled and vibrant array. This is evident in songs such as ‘Follow Me’ and ‘Girl on Top’, which feature guest vocals from Kestra Krohn, and the dreamy and languorous album closer ‘The Future’, which features a delicate and well constructed blend of electronic texturing and orchestral acoustic strings.
The Scientists of Modern Music offer an adventurous and progressive record in A Personal Universe, a worthy addition to the electronic outfits catalogue.
