Australian independent label Popfrenzy, the home of Best Coast, Metronomy, Deerhunter, The Gossip, and The Drums amongst others, has joined Cooperative Music which recently set up shop here in Australia.
The umbrella group, set up in 2011 here in Australia by Tim Janes and Neil Robertson, now looks after a wide range of indie labels including Bella Union, Spunk, DFA, Downtown, Mad Decent, Lucky Number, Heavenly Recordings, Kitsune, Mexican Summer/ Kemado Records, Moshi Moshi, Transgressive, V2 Music, Communion and School Boy Error.
Cooperative Music is headquartered in the United Kingdom and does work with an extensive and impressive list of artists such as Fleet Foxes, Bloc Party, Phoenix, Interpol, The Knife, Mumford and Sons and The Black Keys among others since forming in 2005.
Popfrenzy began making waves on the scene as early as 1999, when founder Chris Wu started putting on indie parties at various venues around Sydney. The company quickly grew to taking on booking responsibilities at a number of local live music venues before the record arm was set up in 2004.
Speaking to the media today, Wu said that the label are “really excited about this new relationship with Cooperative Music, it represents an exciting array of new possibilities, both locally and internationally.”
“Our new relationship with Co-Op allows us to continue introducing fresh and exciting overseas artists to Australian audiences whilst giving local acts greater opportunities internationally.”
“The timing of this deal couldn’t be better with the impending second album from Best Coast – I think this is set to be the label’s most successful release yet. We are stoked to be joining a label group that boasts such respected and like-mined companies.”
As part of the deal, Universal will now handle Popfrenzy’s distribution. The label had previously been distributed by Inertia since early 2009. Best Coast’s sophomore album, The Only Place will be out on May 18.
