Melbourne multi-instrumentalist Cantrips kicks off 2021 with some groovy new music in the form of his new single ‘Goodbye Yesterday’.

2020 was a time of uncertainty for many, especially for musicians. But for Melbourne multi-instrumentalist Cantrips (aka Patrick Ryan), he’s managed to make the most of it by continuing to release new music throughout the year.

And after dropping two great singles – ‘Off With His Head’ and ‘Don’t Open The Bag’ – last year, is kicking off 2021 in a breezy, relaxing fashion by releasing a brand new single titled ‘Goodbye Yesterday’.

Combining surf rock with some psychedelic grooves, ‘Goodbye Yesterday’ is exactly the sort of relaxing banger you’d want to listen to while chilling on the beach with a beer in hand.

Written and recorded in his Thornbury home studio, Cantrips says he attempted to infuse a sense of nostalgia into the lyrics of ‘Goodbye Yesterday’.

“This song was written around the time where I’d just left the safety of full-time employment and was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with myself,” says the Melbourne musician. “I’d been living in this sort of limbo, bereft of meaningful work and was tired of doing nothing about it.”

“I was listening to a lot of 60s pop (Beatles, early Pink Floyd, Margo Guryan), a ton of Curtis Mayfield and other motown grooves, and surfing a bunch. This track meets somewhere in the middle of the three. It’s a song about personal transformation – letting go of who you used to be and taking steps to finding out who you can be.”

Perfectly complementing the chilled out nature of ‘Goodbye Yesterday’ is its accompanying music video, a quirky little number that was filmed by videographer William Hamilton-Coates at the coastal surrounds of Rye in Victoria.

“The late lockdown and ongoing restrictions in Victoria meant that we had to get creative with both concept and execution,” recalls Cantrips. “I’d been watching a lot of Monty Python at the time and the drummer on this track, Lachlan Clulow, suggested using something similar to the ‘endless running’ scene in The Holy Grail. If that wasn’t a sign…”

Cantrips is definitely onto something here with ‘Goodbye Yesterday’ and it seems like he’s tackling 2021 with the same energy as he did for 2020.
