Born just about two years ago, indie rock band Maple Syrup was formed when Vera Ellen and Jerry Ramirez were experimenting with tape recordings on an old 4-track. Influenced by Ween and Bob Dylan they wrote lo-fi folk music with tuned up pitch and nonsensical lyrics. Continuing to play together the couple went traveling and recorded a folk song ‘Money Makers’ in a family friends basement in Virginia.
After retuning to Wellington (NZ) the duo performed a handful of live shows before reciting drummer Tarquin Smith, and old schoolmate of Vera’s. Quickly developing a sound that evolved from lo-fi folk to grunge, influenced by bands like The Pixies and Beck.
After playing as a three piece for six months they added guitar virtuoso Lukas Jury on bass. The band who currently reside in Wellington, New Zealand await the release of their EP and plan for a national tour over the summer.
The trio are now unleashing their impressive new effort ‘Vacation’ the latest taste of what to expect from their forthcoming EP. Check out the sparkling garage pop gem below and if you like what you’re hearing pop by the band’s Facebook page for more info.
