Jim Lawrie has been a drummer in bands for a decade now, most recently for Melbourne indie outfit Eagle and the Worm. Now under the moniker Grizzly Jim Lawrie, Jim has stepped out on his own and hit the ground running, and has been celebrating the success of two lead singles from his forthcoming album; ‘Wish I Was There’ and ‘What Did We Do?’.
Jim’s debut album, Paying My Debts From The Grave, amply showcases his talents as both a singer and songwriter. Layered with pianos, brass and guitars, it is a collection of acoustic driven folk, creating a lush but subtle sound. Lawrie’s music is sonically varied and rich; inspired by the sound of acts like Bon Iver, Bright Eyes, Neil Young and Townes Van Zandt. Filled with witticisms about the heartbreaks of day-to-day life and an unhealthy obsession with the afterlife, Jim’s lyrics tell stories of the past whilst praying for the future, showcasing the writer’s love of words and melody.
The album was engineered by Jimmy Allen (Buckley Ward) and Ryan Nelson (SubAudible Hum, Silver City Highway), appearing on the album is Jim’s brother, Si (Major Tom and the Atoms), Greg Foletta (the Toot Toot Toots), and with Little Red’s Tom Hartney on harmonica.
