The deluxe version of the Phosphorescent long player, Muchacho De Lujo features a live set, recorded in London’s St. Pancras Church.
The live renditions serve to add a layer of understanding and musical dimension to the already celebrated musician.
“While these are in fact songs from our new record, the record doesn’t really sound like this” murmurs Matthew Houck as he launches into an acoustic version of Muchacho’s first single, “Song For Zula”.
Featuring a handful of songs from across Houck’s extended back catalogue, the record mainly draws from Muchacho, but is peppered with cuts from previous albums Pride and Here’s To Taking It Easy.
One of the highlights of the live set is “Wolves” which is stripped to a bare minimum, Houck sounding vulnerable, his fragile voice barely audible amongst the reverberating space.
Over the course of ten minutes, the piece swells and builds, culminating in a full bodied finish. This tender track stands out amongst the others, not only in length, but in being one of the only to fully utilise both extremes of a space such as St. Pancras.
A truly epic release that showcases Phosphorescent’s amazing musical sensitivity, prowess and talent.
