To some, Primus is nothing more than the band who composed and performed the theme to South Park, while to others, they are one of the cornerstones of the experimental-rock genre. Needless to say, it’s the latter of the two groups who are set to get excited, with the group announcing a new record, and releasing the record’s first single.
When Primus got back together in 2010 after eleven years out of the game, fans weren’t sure if they should expect another album. When 2011’s Green Naugahyde was released, fans were ecstatic, but the group’s next record, a reimagining of the soundtrack to Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, didn’t perform as well. That’s probably why fans are keen to hear that the group’s newest record, their ninth, is pure, unadulterated Primus.
Taking to Facebook today, the group shared details of their newest record, The Desaturating Seven. Frontman, and future bass-guitar hall-of-famer, Les Claypool, says that the record is based on a 1970s children’s book he would read to his kids about goblins who steal colours from the world.
“The dark imagery and beauty of the art struck me immediately and I thought, ‘This would make good fodder for a piece of music’,” explains Claypool. “The use of colour and darkness both in the paintings and the writing was compelling and now, near two decades later, the metaphor of greed, gluttony, and deceit vs unity of the masses is eerily relevant. I brought the notion to the Primus guys and they were all for it. Plus, I figured it’s about time someone brought ‘Goblin Rock’ back to the fold.”
Last on our shores for the final Big Day Out shows in 2014, we’re not too sure if Primus have any plans for an Aussie tour just yet, but here’s hoping a new record will bring them back to our fine country for one of the most amazing live shows you could ever witness.
The Desaturating Seven is out September 29th, in the meantime, check out Primus’ newest single, ‘The Seven’, below.
