It’s one of music’s most unlikely pairings, but world renowned ‘Godfather of Punk’, Iggy Pop, has teamed up with Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker to record a cover of one of Nick Cave’s most enduring songs.
As Pitchfork reports, Pop and Cocker (which either sounds like a soft drink or a drain cleaner) recently teamed up to record a cover of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ 1994 hit ‘Red Right Hand’ for the crime drama series Peaky Blinders.
The track is a rather grunge-inspired, post-punk take on the track, which is led by the inimitable vocals of Iggy Pop. We’ve got no proof that Iggy Pop recorded the cover shirtless, but given his reputation, we’re inclined to believe he did.
The cover is just the latest in a series of famous artists offering their take on the track. As the theme to Peaky Blinders, ‘Red Right Hand’ has enjoyed a revival of sorts in recent years, with Laura Marling and Cave’s former collaborator and partner, PJ Harvey all recording covers of the tune.
This new rendition sees things coming somewhat full circle for Iggy Pop, Jarvis Cocker, and Nick Cave. Previously, Pop and Cave had teamed up with Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore for the track ‘Nobody’s City’ in 2014, before Cave soundtracked a touching PETA campaign featuring an animated Iggy Pop-featuring PETA earlier this year.
Likewise, Nick Cave had previously appeared on the B-side to ‘Bad Cover Version’ by Jarvis Cocker’s band, Pulp. Despite the name of the single, it featured Cave performing a rather decent cover of Pulp’s 1995 hit ‘Disco 2000’.
Now, with Iggy Pop and Jarvis Cocker paying tribute by way of a brilliant cover of one of Nick Cave’s finest songs, all we need to see is some sort of supergroup featuring all three of them and we’re set.
