Ranking Roger — real name Roger Charlery — lead vocalist of The Beat and General Public, has passed away. He was 56.

A statement on the band’s website has confirmed that Roger passed away at his home on Tuesday.

“He fought & fought & fought, Roger was a fighter. Sadly Roger past away a few hours ago peacefully at his home surrounded by family,” the statement read. “Roger’s family would like to thank everyone for their constant support during this tough time. More to follow in the coming days. RIP ROGER!”

Back in January, The Beat shared a video with Roger, where he opened up about his various health complications. Roger was battling brain tumours and lung cancer. He had suffered a stroke last year. His official cause of death is yet to be confirmed. Watch the video below.

Roger founded The Beat in 1978 and performed with the band until they disbanded in 1983. The Beat released three studio albums: 1980’s I Just Can’t Stop It, 1981’s Wha’ppen? and 1982’s Special Beat Service.

Following the band’s split, Roger went on to form General Public with bandmate Dave Wakeling, Mickey Billingham and Andy Growcott of Dexys Midnight Runners and Horace Panter of The Specials.
