A solid and bewitching set, The Wolves is a beautiful dreamy collection of indie-pop and the debut LP from Melbourne outfit, Brighter Later.
First time self-producer and songwriter Jaye Kranz has, with the help of bassist and collaborator Virginia Bott, put together ten slick psychedelically delicious songs that will transport you to a mystical world.
Opening track, ‘All The World’ is the perfect introduction into this dreamland. It’s hazy simplistic melody, coupled with singer Kranz’s unique vocals, makes for an unusual album opener that you will get lost in.
The Melbourne local has one of the most peculiar and most beautiful voices in Australian music. It is reminiscent of Silversun Pickups’ singer Brian Aubert, and enhances every song on The Wolves to a dreamlike status.
New single ‘Come And Go’ is a song that lifts and falls and altogether hooks you in on its turbulent journey.
It’s followed on the record by ‘Magnolia’, a more stripped back version of Brighter Later’s psych-folk that is even more beautiful and hypnotic for what it lacks in musicality. The soft hum underneath the vocals and seemingly effortless melody make it an album standout.
If you needed any more convincing of the lo-fi indie popsters place as a dreamlike outfit, just listen to the lyrics of first single ‘The Woods’, where Kranz’s smooth vocals proclaim, “And I will wake you in the season / I will whisper while you sleep.”
Add in a soft chanted opening melody, a slow steady drum beat, and harmonious hushed choruses and you have the perfect entry into Brighter Later’s mysterious and enchanting world.
