For any Chet Faker fans it’s likely that the Live Sessions EP is nothing new. However after the release of a live trailer on YouTube last year, anticipation for its release was understandably high.

Chet Faker, aka Melbourne’s Nick Murphy, made a name for himself with his beautifully soulful electronic productions but it’s his live show that has kept the buzz humming.

Recorded in an ex-Butter Factory in regional Victoria, the beauty of these songs is truly revealed in this acoustic setting with incredible arrangements.

Murphy is no stranger to the power of a good cover and his brilliantly simple version of UK producer Burial’s ‘Archangel’ is the clear highlight.

The subtleness and power of Chet Faker’s voice takes this cover beyond the original, infusing a deep soul feel with incredible dynamics and by far the most impressive drumming on the EP.

‘Love And Feeling’ takes on far more soulful jazz characteristics with these four instruments than the original on Thinking In Textures. Again it’s Murphy’s voice in this and ‘No Diggity’ that really stands out, especially underpinned by what has to be one of Melbourne’s tightest rhythm sections.

The stripped back electronic arrangements take on a whole new character in this authentic environment. What also shines through of course is the quality of musicianship.

The only disappointment is that there isn’t more on here, especially some other original tracks. Having said that it certainly serves to highlight what an incredible live show Chet Faker can deliver.

After last year’s amazing Thinking In Textures EP, this offering simply cements Murphy’s incredible talents as an arranger and musician.
