Although Paradise is stylistically consistent with their previous Told You So EP, Cub Scouts have made noticeable improvements to their composition and musical arrangements.

The five-piece are known for their brightly cheerful tones and playfully contagious melodies, and Paradise is no exception. Composed of infectiously catchy riffs and the sugar-sweet vocals of frontman Tim Nelson, the Brisbane band have once again successfully produced the cozy pop that brought them to fame.

Their undeniably catchy song “Pool!” has proven to be the antidote for summer cravings in the dead of winter. Adding to the seasonal vibes, the uplifting sound of the EP’s title track creates a sense of relaxation and warmth through the band’s signature electronic beats and unruffled nonchalance.

The rest of the EP generally consists of irresistible pop hits blended with subtle melancholy in a sweet-and-sour fashion. Their optimistic songs are well balanced with delicate elements of sombre expression, seen in tracks like “Shuffle” and “Write You a Letter”. The songs follow a basic-yet-effective formula: simple lyrics, predominant piano and Tim Nelson’s harmonious falsetto, (ably supported by Zoe Davis’ backing vocals).

This new collection displays the diversity of the Brisbane band while also demonstrating the growing substance in their music. It’s also effective in differentiating them from the generic pop bands that are seemingly everywhere today.

Despite the limited number of tracks on the EP, Cub Scouts have earned themselves a commendation for creating this impressive effort. They’re definitely headed for bigger and better things in the near future.
