With the 2021 Hottest 100 set to take place on January 22nd, 2022, we here at Tone Deaf have decided to take a stroll down memory lane, recapping the countdowns of yesteryear in the lead-up to the latest edition of musical democracy. Today, we’re taking a look back at the Hottest 100 of 2017.

Taking place on January 27th, 2018, and attracting over 2.3 million votes, the triple j Hottest of 2017 was the 25th annual countdown held by the station which limited votes to songs released in the last year.

The 2017 countdown was once again preceded by a small amount of controversy, with triple j officially deciding to change the date of the countdown for the first time since 2003. After attracting calls to change the date in 2016, the station announced in late 2017 that the countdown would be held on the fourth Saturday of January, which happened to be the 27th.

Despite this controversy, which was met with vocal criticisms from many conservative commentators, triple j’s countdown went ahead as planned, with Kendrick Lamar taking out the countdown, ending a four-year streak for Aussie artists.

While Kendrick Lamar became the first artist to top the countdown after previously reaching #2, Gang Of Youths undoubtedly dominated the top end, becoming the third artist after Powderfinger and Chet Faker to have three tracks in the top ten.

Likewise, the 2017 countdown marked the first time since 2009 that Illy had not appeared in a yearly poll

At the end of the day, triple j’s Hottest 100 for 2017 featured songs by 76 different artists from a total of 6 countries, including 65 from Australia, 18 from the USA, and 10 from England.
