Lucky vinyl-lovers were treated to one pretty amazing performance for Record Store Day yesterday, with an alt-rock supergroup covering classic tracks from T. Rex.

How was your Record Store Day? Like most folks, there’s a good chance you spent your day picking up some limited edition vinyl while checking out some rather special instore performances at your local record store.

However, if you found yourself in Long Beach, California, then you might have been able to witness some iconic musicians perform the very release you were there to grab.

Limited to 3,000 copies, Red Hot Chili Peppers members Josh Klinghoffer and Chad Smith teamed up to cover two tracks by English rockers T. Rex for a very special 7″ release.

Performing ‘Jeepster’ and ‘Monolith’ on this limited-edition record, the musicians decided to hit up California’s Fingerprints Music on Saturday to give fans a live demonstration.

Backed by Jane’s Addiction’s Eric Avery and Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready, the impromptu supergroup played a full set of T. Rex classics, offering up other fantastic tracks such as ‘Life’s A Gas’.

Overall, this was the very thing that Record Store Day set out to achieve, with musicians and music lovers coming together to celebrate the world of music and vinyl.

In related news, the Australian Recording Industry Organisation used Record Store Day as the perfect opportunity to release their first-ever vinyl albums chart.

“The renewed love affair of Australian music fans with vinyl albums has been a phenomenon over the last few years,” explained Dan Rosen, Chief Executive of ARIA.

“There is a major sense of nostalgia to the experience of vinyl. The format is tangible and collectable, often with original and numbered artworks.”

“Artists are increasingly using physical formats such as vinyl as a way to give their fans a substantial way of showing their fandom, often working hand in hand with the digital and streaming version for the artist.”

Following the release of the year-end for 2018, a number of new and classic releases featured in this week’s top ten, including three classic releases by rock icons Queen.
