Rihanna turned down the chance to headline next years Super Bowl halftime show due to the NFL’s treatment of Colin Kaepernick and their policies surrounding the national anthem, according to a Us Weekly report.

Sources close to the singer revealed “They offered it to her, but she said no because of the kneeling controversy. She doesn’t agree with the NFL’s stance.” Also telling Entertainment Tonight “The offer and exposure would have been great for Rihanna as she’s planning a new album and tour but she stuck to what’s right in her eyes,”

Rihanna’s last studio album was 2016’s Anti. The highly anticipated follow up is expected at some point next year. Kaepernick has not played since he caused the original controversy surrounding kneeling during the national anthem back in 2016. He filed a lawsuit against the NFL last year.

A source also confirmed that P!nk was approached to perform at next year’s Super Bowl but turned it down after negotiations stalled. It has been reported that the show will now be performed by Maroon 5 and special guests.

Whilst nothing has been announced officially, it looks like the guests will include their “Girls Like You” collaborator – Cardi B. Super Bowl LIII will take place in February next year. Check out Lady Gaga’s 2017 half time show below.
