In a recent interview, the frontman of Royal Blood, Mike Kerr, has opened up about how Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater introduced him to bands like Rage Against the Machine.

During an appearance on the TODDCast Podcast, Royal Blood bassist/singer Mike Kerr looked back on the early days of his musical journey, and how he discovered music way back in the day.

Royal Blood released their last full-length project How Did We Get So Dark? in June 2017. When asked about the music that was in his house when he was growing up, Mike Kerr opened up about his mother’s CD collection, and also a certain game that introduced him to a whole new world of music.

The interview below has been (transcribed by UG):

“My dad was very much into, like, jazz, which never really grabbed me. My mom’s CD collection was always the shit you just buy at the supermarket, you know, loads of greatest-hits records.

“I remember finding, like, Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys and The Beatles, and lots of… Yeah, a massive introduction to rock ‘n’ roll in that sense.

“But I kind of discovered stuff on my own, really. I don’t have any older brothers; I had lots of sisters listening to, like, fucking Spice Girls, which I wasn’t really into when I was young.

“So I kind of found things along the way. Like, it’s funny, I thought the other day about – you know that PlayStation 2 game, ‘Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater‘? I just realised the amount of music I discovered through that game was actually pretty mental.

“Yeah, I didn’t have anyone to show it to me, so I discovered like, you know, Rage Against the Machine through that – just the things that I like, really.”
