Fresh from their South By South West appearance and a string of US and UK shows, San Cisco brought their sunny pop tunes to a receptive audience at the Corner Hotel.
Beginning the evening amidst a growing crowd on the venue’s dance floor was Seattle duo Chaos Chaos. The two sisters fused warm vocal harmonies with synth lines to create an ambient atmosphere for the audience.
Their rich and broody pop sounds featured pounding drumbeats by Chloe Saaverda and pumping keyboard keys by vocalist, Saaverda. With their emotional lyrics and electronic sound, there was a clear similarity between the duo and Canadian sister act Tegan & Sara.
This resemblance began much more apparent when the two performed an acoustic cover of the band’s latest single “Closer”. With their flawless harmonies and delicate keyboard melody, the band got even those standing at the bar to head towards the stage.
The second support act, Millions added more energy to the pre-show with their bluesy rock sounds. With a growing crowd and many of the concert-goers waiting eagerly at the barrier for the main act, the Brisbane band got the audience dancing and singing from the first song with their nostalgia garage rock inspired tracks.
Their opener “Champagne” featured a slick guitar riff and a rhythmic energy, which had the crowd bopping and couples twirling each other around in seconds. Their captivating stage presence set the tone for the rest of the show as they performed a cover of Hot Chocolate’s 70s classic “You Sexy Thing” with the lead singer meandering throughout the dance floor.
The anticipation for San Cisco was building as their sold out show saw the Corner Hotel’s capacity stretched to its very limits. With a selection of Triple J favourites being played over the speakers, it said something about the band’s popularity that their presence on stage gained a louder roar than when Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” started playing. Dimming the lights on the restless audience, the curtain was suddenly spread and the Perth band launched right into their set.
Met with squeals of joy, the band began with “Rocket Ship”, a beachy dance tune. Lead singer, Jordi Davieson’s velvet vocals and lyrics were shouted back at him word for word. The sing-a-long “oh la la las” saw the crowd erupt into dance, enjoying the high energy maintained throughout the band’s set.
They followed it up with the infectious “Lyall” from their debut album. The band’s pop sound transferred to a live setting effortlessly with the band appearing laid back as they played under the haze of coloured fairy lights on stage.
Though notably reserved, the band spoke briefly in between songs and seemed considerably modest, given their recent success.
The band also played a series of their older tracks from their growing repertoire. “Golden Revolver’” from their first EP saw the venue turn into a chilled out beach party as inflatable beach bowls bounced across the audience.
By the time the opening riff of “Awkward” was played, the band were met with cheers as the audience relished in the song that brought San Cisco the attention they deserve. With their call and response style lyrics the band created the same danceable energy from the track’s film clip.
“Fred Astaire”, their latest single from their debut self titled album album was another highlight. From it’s pulsating drum beats to its endearing love struck lyrics, it was a crowd favourite.
After briefly leaving the stage, the band returned for an encore. Launching into “Wild Things”, they were joined by the support bands members who jumped up and down wildly to the song. It’s this kind of infectious energy, which is why San Cisco are so adored.
