Just one day after new music was first rumoured, Sleater-Kinney have returned with their first new studio track in over four years.

Over the last couple of years, fans have been wondering when we might be receiving new music from Sleater-Kinney. After Carrie Brownstein revealed in early 2018 that the group were planning a new record, this was soon expanded upon, with album #9 being promised for an early 2019 release.

While ‘early 2019’ has come and gone, it was announced back in January that the group had teamed up with Annie Clark (better known as St. Vincent) to record their first album since 2015’s No Cities To Love.

Just yesterday though, Sleater-Kinney began teasing fans a little bit more, unveiling some social media posts with the words “Unlovable”, “Unfuckable”, and “Unlistenable”, and links to their website which seemed to hint new music was on the way.

Now, we’ve received the first taste of their new record.

Released today, Sleater-Kinney have unleashed ‘Hurry On Home’, the first single from their upcoming album.

An arresting, catchy, number, the ‘Hurry On Home’ is as powerful as it is unapologetic, with lyrics focusing on insecurities and vulnerabilities, while Carrie Brownstein declares herself “unfuckable, unlovable, unlistenable, unwatchable” throughout the track.

“I think for Carrie and Corin it was liberating to explore a different sound palette,” drummer Janet Weiss explains of the new music.

“Instead of just going into the studio to document what we’d done, we were going in to explore and to find the essence of something. To dig in deeper,” explains Carrie Brownstein, before guitarist Corin Tucker adds that working on new music “was like this manic energy of empowerment.”

Backed by an eye-catching lyric video recorded entirely on an iPhone, the new track has been released through Courtney Barnett’s Milk! Records here in Australia.

While Sleater-Kinney featured in the clip for Barnett’s ‘Elevator Operator’, here’s hoping Courtney can convince them to visit Australia as part of the eventual album tour!
