Soul legend Solomon Burke has died at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. Due to perform at a club in the city, he apparently died on a flight from Los Angeles. Infamous for his generously proportioned figure, Burke performed on a special throne. Although he didn’t quite reach the levels of stardom os contemporaries such as Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye, he nonetheless enjoyed a strong following around the world and was inducted in to the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. He wrote and recorded his biggest hit ‘Everybody Needs Somebody To Love’ in 1964 which was covered by The Rolling Stones and Wilson Pickett.
