Bruce Springsteen has demanded his name be removed from a lawsuit being filed against a New York bar. The suit against Connolly’s Pub filed by ASCAP, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers; claims that several of The Boss’ songs were performed at the venue by an unidentified band for profit. In doing so they supposedly violated Springsteen’s copyright.
A statement on The Boss’ website said:
In regards to the ASCAP lawsuit against Connolly’s Pub and Restaurant, ASCAP was solely responsible for naming Bruce Springsteen as a plaintiff in the lawsuit. Bruce Springsteen had no knowledge of this lawsuit, was not asked if he would participate as a named plaintiff, and would not have agreed to do so if he had been asked. Upon learning of this lawsuit this morning, Bruce Springsteen’s representatives demanded the immediate removal of his name from the lawsuit.
A wise move Bruce. Now at Tone Deaf we’d like ASCAP to devote all their member’s fees to chasing after every cover band or even original band that’s ever played a Boss cover. That could potentially clog up the US legal system for years.
