From its initial beats, Spit Syndicate’s record is fantastic.
Everything that you can love about Australian hip-hop is there: strong breaks, clever rhymes, a catchy chorus, and two rappers that are inherently likeable.
Spit Syndicate have a sound that is part Illy and part Thundamentals but still entirely their own. It is safe to agree with their assertion that they’re “off the chain, the charts. We off everything”.
The lead single from the Sydney duo, ‘Beauty In The Bricks’, is an ode to the inner suburbs that the boys call home. ‘Folly’, produced by Stylaz Fuego, has a more synth-y, electronic vibe to it. Thematically it’s about growing up, and the kids “trying to get the sinning all out of their system”.
Sarah Corry features on two of the songs, ‘Creep’ and ‘World’s Apart. Her voice is a nice contrast to the boys’ rapping, its soft and airy and a really nice contribution to the album.
A lot of the songs are about growing up and finding a balance between caution and recklessness. It really sounds like advice coming from two people who’ve been through a lot and avoids sounding preachy or judgemental.
The whole album is polished, catchy, and definitely worth a listen.
