The Stone Roses’ legendary gig at Spike Island near Widnes between Liverpool and Manchester in May 1990 is set to form the backdrop for a new film. The as yet untitled film is being made by the writer of UK TV series Misfits, and has been written by the actor who played the Happy Mondays’ Bez in 24 Hour Party People, Chris Coghill.
The film will follow a group of council estate residing musos in an unsigned band, and is set to feature cameos from those involved in the infamous gig. Taking place on a disused industrial site, the gig was attended by 30,000 people and is considered to be the ‘Madchester’ Woodstock, although it was blighted by poor facilities and sound problems.
Co-producer Fiona Neilson of Fiesta Productions says “The Stone Roses changed our teenage lives and Chris has captured that perfectly, creating a screenplay that will appeal both to fans and to a broad audience who will fall in love with the characters and their story.”
