Prepare for another taste of fiery hip-hop collective SUPEREGO’s sophomore EP, Nautilus, wth the single ‘Outer Body Stranger’.
Featuring powerhouse Sampa The Great and blending her signature striking style with the group’s ever-evolving dynamic, the track (written by frontman POW(ER)! Negro And produced by SUPEREGO member Faoul Duke) is described as a personal coming of age story. Created in collaboration with Sampa, ‘Outer Body Stranger’ comes out today alongside a striking new video.
“‘OBS’ is about POWs’ attempt for a deeper connection to his African heritage,” says the band. “While coming to terms with being a person of mixed race living in Australia.
‘At odds with the educational system and westernised Australian rites of passage, POW turns to unconventional methods to find the man he is becoming and expose what is beyond the confines of materialist western society.
“The song follows the summoning of ancestral African spirits, represented by Sampa the Great, for guidance, life direction and answers. What unfolds is a sonic exhalation of the internal struggle and anguish of understanding oneself.”
The Fremantle based five-piece is no stranger to experimentation, and this new release is no exception. Brought together through their love of hip-hop production and unique live music, SUPEREGO have quickly gained a reputation around Australia for their energetic and enigmatic live show, sharing stages with the likes of Midnight Oil, Blackalicious, Remi, and of course, Sampa The Great.
The band speak to the black experience in a predominantly white Australia, as well as the unique social and individual challenges we face in the modern world. SUPEREGO draw upon an array of influences from the US underground hip-hop scene, to UK experimental pop.
