Perth wunderkinds Tame Impala are sitting on the front page of influential chin stroking music hipster website pitchfork.com, after having their debut album Innerspeaker featured as album of the week and being given a very respectable 8.5/10 rating. This is in comparison to Jet, who on the same website had their second album Shine On infamously reviewed with just a video of a monkey pissing in its mouth.
Rather than commenting on their obvious similarities to sixties acts like Cream and Love, reviewer Zach Kelly sprinkles the superlatives throughout the review with wild abandon, deciding that it’s okay for this Aussie band to wear obvious influences on its sleeve. It’s difficult to be so plugged-in to a vintage feel without the music seeming time-capsuled, but the band’s vibrance help these songs sound very much alive.
Innerspeaker is out now on the wannabe hipster’s label of choice, Modular.
