Late last week, the full Homebake 2013 lineup was announced, featuring an all-Aussie bill playing over three days at the steps of the Sydney Opera House this December.
The move in venue and the lineup announcement revealing the festival’s 18th birthday plans – coinciding with the Sydney landmark’s 40th anniversary – came off the back of a ‘leak’ by legendary Aussie frontman Tex Perkins in a radio interview with ABC Dig Radio.
But the singer now wants to “set the record straight,” saying that he only discussed his involvement on the Homebake 2013 lineup and its relocation because he was under the impression that the information would not be disclosed until a planned announcement by festival organisers in October.
“I would never go out of my way to ruin such an exciting announcement for a festival,” defends Perkins in a statement posted on his own Facebook page today. The singer claims ABC‘s Dig radio acted with “unprofessional conduct” in deliberately misusing his statements to spoil Homebake’s plans by leaking the information, which was quickly circulated by music press and media.
“Last week Dig Radio released a quote online from me about Home Bake being relocated this year, which should be cleared up,” adds Perkins in the statement, which cotinues:
I was at Dig to guest program a show that is to be aired in late October, under the proviso that anything within the podcast would be confidential until the air date. After being asked what I would like to promote when this will be aired in October – I said the Beasts are playing at Home Bake, knowing that by the time this aired that news would have been officially announced.
The producers from the ABC decided to release that information as a news grab without clearing it with myself or anyone from Home Bake, they did this with full knowledge of the consequences of putting that information out early and full knowledge that the event was yet to make any kind of official announcement, and full knowledge that the information was gathered by them under the pretence of a specific air date.
Homebake and myself have subsequently received an apology from Dig for their unprofessional conduct. I just wanted to set the record straight, that I would never go out of my way to ruin such an exciting announcement for a festival.”
Despite the Homebake 2013 announcement mishap, Perkins closes his statement by announcing his enthusiasm for helping the all-Aussie festival celebrate its 18th birthday. “I’m really happy that The Beasts of Bourbon are playing Home Bake 2013 for their 18th anniversary at the Sydney Opera House and can’t wait to see you all there!”
Beasts Of Bourbon play the third and final day of Homebake 2013, as part of a rock-themed lineup that features Bernard Fanning, You Am I, The Rubens, Kingswood, and Courtney Barnett. The first two days of the event, at the new location of the Sydney Opera House forecourt, will also see live performances from the likes of Paul Kelly, Gurrumul, and Eskimo Joe (on Friday 6th December), as well as The Presets, Cat Empire, Architecture In Helsinki, (on Saturday 7th Dec) and many more besides.
The return to an exclusively Australian lineup follows on from last year’s Homebake Global Edition featuring headliners Blondie, while the move in location to the surrounds of the Sydney Opera House sees the event move from its traditional home (in recent years) from the Botanical Garden settings of The Domain.
“With this one off move from the wide spread grounds of The Domain, we’re scaling back the size to the stunning and intimate harbour side forecourt however scaling up for three days of music, comedy, activities, amazing bars, markets and great food,” wrote festival organisers in a statement.
Tickets for Homebake 2013 go on sale next Wednesday 25th September (details below) offering punters the chance to grab a slice of all-Aussie cake this December for Homebake’s 18th birthday and the Sydney Opera House’s four decades of existence.
