With the fame comes the haters and UK indie outfit The 1975 certainly have their share of both. With the rate at which they cop slack, it’s not surprising Tone Deaf’s Matilda Edwards speculated their new album is an attempt to shuck “their typecast as an indie boyband for teens“.
Turning the tables on their critics, in their new music video for ‘The Sound’, the band have collected all of their favourite lines from their most scathing reviews and used them as a recurring motif, with choice quotes like, “Do people really still make music like this?”
Other gems include “Unconvincing emo lyrics”, “This band thinks it has a charismatic singer,” “Terrible high-pitched vocals over soulless robo beats”, and our personal favourite, “They’re essentially making robotic Huey Lewis tunes.”
No, they’re just making fun of themselves, and rather brilliantly, we must say. Readers can check out the video for ‘The Sound’, a cut from their new album, I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It.
