One of our current favourites, Melbourne punk/ garage/ weird pop collective Mangelwurzel are set to release their long-awaited debut LP, Gary, on Friday, 26th February and to celebrate they’ve unleashed a new single, ‘I.O.U.’, and announced a national tour.
Having honed their live chops opening for the likes of Pond, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, The Courtney’s (CAN), and Tonstartssbandht (USA) the six-piece are fast becoming renowned for their energetic and unpredictable live performances, drawing influence from a wide spectrum of genres, the band’s live shows take you on manic journeys through new wave, right through to power pop.
Recorded with Liam Barton at The Bank, mixed by Stu Mackenzie (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard), and mastered by Mikey Young, Gary, is set to be one of the most unforgettable debuts of 2016. To celebrate the upcoming album and tour, we decided to find out just what records shaped the band.
Nirvana – Bleach
1989, Sub Pop
As a 7 year old I couldn’t quite grasp the subject matter entirely but the raw sounds were so delightfully brutal to my fresh ears. I can still remember all the words. (Cosi)
Favourite track: ‘Negative Creep’
Flying Burrito Brothers – The Gilded Palace of Sin
1969, A&M Records
Discovered it maybe five years ago.
Made me realise country music can be totally badass and changed my whole perception of the genre. Its one of those albums that just makes you feel at ease with everything. (Johnny Baird)
Favourite song: ‘Hot Burrito No. 1’
Spice Girls – Spice World
1997, Virgin
As a 5 year old scary spice was sooo cool and I’d never heard or seen an all female band before.
When I first got the album I put on my favourite track ‘Spice Up Your Life’ and danced to it in my navy blue matching crop top and underwear after eating three bowls of spaghetti bolognese fuck yeah best night ever. (Charlie Woods)
Hans Unstern – The Great Hans Unstern Swindle
2012, Staatsakt
Discovered while touring Germany. He makes cynical anger very beautiful and funny. I think we all need all the help we can get to do that.
My favorite track is Ergiebig und Erschwinglich. It involves lyrics about vomiting and pissing in a lake and it’s a really lovely song. (Anna joy Gordon)
Aqua – Aquarium
1997, Universal
Discovered Aquarium by Aqua I was seven years old, playing a round of mini golf, when first heard ‘Barbie Girl’ by Aqua and I immediately got an erection.
I think anything that can give you an erection on a mini golf course should certainly be paid attention to. The rest of the album is like pushing rope but it’s besides the point. (Christopher Windley)
