For the past ten years electronic collective The Operatives have helped shape and define Australia’s burgeoning electronic music scenes.
Over the past decade and a bit The Operatives have been responsible for tours of ground-breaking international musicians and heaping harvest the ever growing collective of local talent.
They’re celebrating their 11th year with a huge party at The Revolt Artspace, Kensington on June the 6th featuring one of their biggest line-ups to date, including LA producer TOKiMONSTA.
TOKiMONSTA got her start making woozy, cosmic glitch-hop, with a background in classical piano, becoming the first female to release music on Flying Lotus’ indomitable label Brainfeeder. Her latest EP ‘Desiderium’ as well as a acclaimed sunset set at this year’s Coachella has further cemented her reputation creating infectious RNB cuts, anchored by jazzy innovative beat patterns.
To celebrate the killer gig and 11 years of The Operatives, the crew put together a guide to their favourite Aussie acts of 2015. Check out their picks below, and for tickets and info on the event visit www.theoperatives.com.au.
Dizz1 – ‘Higher’ ft Frank Nitt
Chosen by: NAM
“Straight hip hop Dilla inspired banger with Frank Nitt aka Frank’n’Dank on mic duties and produced by our own Dizz1. I love everything Dizz releases! Support local music!”
Amin Payne – Saffron (Album)
Chosen by: JPS
Why this is his release: “For many reasons. Seeing the development of an artist coming strongly into his own with such vast improvements in production techniques, quality in sound, drawing from such diverse ethnic influences and just the plain vibe of the record. It truly is a standout Australian release.”
Sekkleman – ‘Dromilly’ Ave feat Serocee
Chosen by: Lady Banton
“Is a deep heavy roller made by Melbourne’s own Sekkleman.”
Mathas – ‘Stone Cold Sober’ (Feat. Empty)
Chosen by: Able8
“While I may be slightly biased, my favourite Australian release this year comes from two very good Perth-based friends of mine. Those artists being Mathas & my cousin and good pal, Empty.
On Stone Cold Sober, Mathas displays his unique talent for story telling, which he weaves effortlessly with smooth vocal tones. Empty kills it on the chorus and with his original music composition. The violin and piano riffs are the kind that deeply embed themselves into your psyche, especially on repeat listens.
To add the that, the video clip is a very slick production which narrates the lyrics and vibe perfectly. It’s been great seeing these two artists evolve over the years, as they continue to create music that transcends the mainstream trends of Australian Hip-Hop.”
Zanzibar Chanel – ‘Drunk At The Jazz Dub’
Chosen by: Edd Fisher
“Casual house music from Melbourne’s Zanzibar Chanel.”
Hwls – ‘004’ feat Noah Breakfast
Chosen by: Akouo
“Hwls aka Ta-ku and Kit Pop are two of the best producers (in my mind) in the country, both really diverse and they’re willing to take risks. This tune with Noah Breakfast is an absolute banger, easily one of my fave tunes of the past year.”
Recue and Jolea – ‘Knives Are Falling’
Chosen by: DJ Kuya
“I picked this track because it has so much beauty and emotion in the sounds. Stunning.”
Aybner – ‘Aerial Love Remix’ (Orgi Daniel Johns)
Chosen by: Hans DC
“Aussie song, aussie remixed… who by the way is only 15 years old. Each time I’ve played it someone asks me what it is.”
JPS x HOOVES – ‘Ghost Fad’
Chosen by: A13
“This track is pure fire and a dance floor filler! And the production on this bad boy is second to none. Big ups JPS and Hooves!”
Mista Savona – ‘The Formula Riddum’
Chosen by: Hooves
“My pick is The Formula Riddum by Mista Savona, It’s a haunting, pulsating and visceral beat from arguably Australia’s most important reggae and dancehall producer. It’s just got that vibe and I can’t stop playing it!”
