Aussie pub-rock exports The Chats have spoken about that surreal moment where they were joined backstage by the likes of Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, and more.

Just last month, Sunshine Coast rockers The Chats found themselves at the centre one of the year’s most iconic photos, taking a backstage snap with Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, and Alex Turner and Matt Helders of the Arctic Monkeys.

Of course, we already knew the band had been rubbing shoulders with the greats. After all, The Chats scored a spot on Queens Of The Stone Age’s last Aussie tour after Josh Homme was introduced to ‘Smoko’ by Dave Grohl. Soon enough, this saw Iggy Pop discovering the track and nabbing the band as the support for his latest Australian shows.

While the group also found themselves with Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong (who they dubbed “Billy Joel”), no one expected a humble Aussie band like The Chats to be in the company of so many huge names while backstage at a sold-out show at The Regent Theatre in Los Angeles.

Now, in a chat with NME while performing at the Reading Festival, the band have explained just how it all came to be.

Check out the iconic photo:

“We knew Josh was coming because we texted him to come down,” the group explained. “He said ‘chuck us on for a plus three’ and we thought he’d be bringing his kids.

“I walked outside to go on stage and there’s Dave Grohl, Alex Turner, Matt Helders and all the boys.

“Dave Grohl told me ‘don’t fuck it up’ before we went on,” they added when asked if any advice was offered up to them ahead of their show.

While The Chats are indeed one of the most prominent names when it comes to Aussie rock at the moment, there’s no telling what the future holds for them. Who knows, at this rate we might even find out that the likes of Robert Plant has a soft spot for ‘Pub Feed’ when the mood strikes him.

In related news, The Chats unleashed their latest single – ‘Identity Theft’ – last month, and will be kicking off an Aussie tour next month to celebrate. Check out all the details below.
