Due to the 20th anniversary celebrations surrounding Nirvana and their seminal album Nevermind it seems impossible to escape tributes and news relating to the band. This week we’ve caught wind of a very special kind of tribute, with The Muppets covering classic track ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ for their upcoming Hollywood film, The Muppets.
There’s no indiction yet how the track may be included in the film, about the world’s biggest Muppets fan attempt to help Kermit, Gonzo and the gang save their theater from evil oilman Tex Richman. However according to Ultimate Classic Rock, the track is performed by The Muppets Barbershoop Quartet and will feature on the official soundtrack of the movie along with 4 original tracks written by Flight of the Conchords member Bret McKenzie.
We can’t help but wonder if the Nirvana track is somehow related to reports that Dave Grohl is set to make a cameo appearance, acting as a stand in for Muppets drummer Animal who is forced to attend anger management classes as part of the movie’s plot. See the full tracklisting for the soundtrack below. The Muppets movie opens in Australia on 1st January 2012.
