Following Vance Joy topping a Hottest 100 countdown dominated by Aussie artists and new acts, the best of the rest were given their due as Triple J revealed the results of the tracks that charted in the follow-up #101 – #200 countdown.
Airing on the station on the Monday after the Hottest 100’s traditional Australia Day broadcast, the list of the next 100 songs to claim the popular vote in the ‘world’s largest musical democracy’ is a mix of glaring omissions from the main poll as much as it was a continuation of cuts from artists that dominated the Top 100.
In the former category was Jake Bugg, the 19-year-old Nottingham rock scamp’s ‘What Doesn’t Kill You’ landing at #101, just being pipped to a spot on the bottom of the Hottest 100 by Karnivool – their track ‘We Are’ coming in at #100, while their other Asymmetry single, ‘Eidolon’, came in at #177.
Others that nearly scraped into the Hottest 100 included ‘Youth’ by UK indie trio Daughter, Lily Allen’s (not so) controversial comeback hit ‘Hard Out Here’, and ‘Hearts Like Ours’ from New Zealand electro-rock band The Naked And Famous.
Like the upper half, the next 100 was also characterised by a strong presence of Australian acts, with a combined 46 songs in the ‘runners-up’ rankings.
That list includes ‘Avant Gardener’ from Courtney Barnett, the remix of Hunters & Collectors’ ‘Talking To A Stranger’ by The Avalanches, cuts from Triple J Unearthed favourites Tkay Maidza, Wave Racer, Asta, and Meg Mac, while Brisbane’s The Jungle Giants, indie waifs Snakadaktal, hip hop majors Bliss N Eso, sister rockers Stonefield and prog band Dead Letter Circus all charted with multiple entries.
Arctic Monkeys, Kanye West, and Lorde – who all had multiple high-charting entries in the Hottest 100 – also had a number of songs in the next 100 list.
Interestingly, a large number of acts performing at this year’s Laneway Festival – which kicks off this Friday – also charted in the ‘next 100’, including internationals such as hip hop imp Danny Brown, psych-garage combo Unknown Mortal Orchestra, cathartic scots Frightened Rabbit, ginger-songwriter King Krule, and Aussie bands Jagwar Ma, Violent Soho, and Cloud Control.
