Just when we though New Zealand couldn’t possibly have another global music export (it is a microcontinent after all), the ‘land of the long white cloud’ gives us Thomston.
Those playing at home might remember the sheer brilliance of the 23-year-old kiwi’s single ‘Lightweight’. Tapped as his “boldest single yet”, the modern day take on love followed 2018-released singles like his liberating opus ‘The Heights’ and the soaring ‘Acid Rain’.
Now, LA-based Thomas Stoneman AKA Thomston has unleashed a brand new alt-pop banger into the world in the form of ‘Deal’.
Co-written with fellow kiwis Nicholas Chrisp (of Sachi), Jacob Schdroski (of LA Women) and Montell2099, ‘Deal’ explores the dichotomy of modern communication.
Thomston said of the track:
“Online connectivity can do us dirty when it comes to being communicative. People are so accessible, that we’ve grown increasingly disposable. We’re messaged until we’re ghosted, and that can mess with your sense of self-worth. ‘Deal’ is facing that disposability head on, demanding clarity about a relationship.”

Thomston said the track “came together so quickly and naturally”.
“[…] As simple as the chorus lyric is, there’s something undeniable about the boldness of asking someone ‘what the deal is’ in 2019, coz why be confrontational when there are a million other people you can talk to in an instant?”
Even more exciting though, is the announcement of a double EP from Thomston. Thomston is set to release two EPs this September via Warner Music. Titled Los Angeles and London, the EPs divide the songs into two moods and environments.
“My hope is that this will give a sense of structure and cohesion to this collection of songs written with a bunch of different people over the last three years,” he said.
Thomston has also announced an Australian headline tour for this September. Kicking off in Sydney on the 19th at The Lansdowne, the tour will then see Thomston take in Melbourne at the Workers Club on Friday September 20 and Brisbane at The Black Bear Lodge on Sunday September 22.
