The NFL is giving back to frontline workers who have braved the pandemic in the form of a free pre-Super Bowl concert called TikTok Tailgate starring Miley Cyrus and a slew of other artists throughout the night.

The announcement of Cyrus as the headliner for the event came early this morning (Australian time) on both her official account, as well as the NFL account.

“SUPER BOWL LV!!! 💗 🏈

I’ll be there for TIKTOK TAILGATE!!! I can’t wait to put on a show for the NFL’s honored guests before the game…. Health care workers from Tampa and around the country!  Join the tailgate at 2:30 PM ET FEBRUARY 7 on @TikTok & @cbstv ! #SBLV,” the popstar posted.

Late last week the NFL announced that they had invited 7,500 ‘health care heroes’ to attend the Super Bowl on February 7, 2021 for free. The essential workers in attendance will have already received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine prior to attending and will get to watch the game, as well as the artists perform live.

The relevance of TikTok in the namesake TikTok Tailgate refers to the fact that the performance will stream live on the app as well as American Channel, CBS.

If you’re not familiar with the term tailgating, it’s an American tradition which is basically a small party in the back of a ute outside a sports event involving a lot of beer. So, in layman’s terms, it’s pretty much some car park pre-drink-tinnies before the footy, for us Aussies.

Aside from Miley Cyrus, the NFL has already announced that the Weeknd will be performing as the coveted half time act for the Super Bowl. Eric Church and Jazmine Sullivan will also make an appearance on the night as they’re scheduled to sing ‘Star Spangled Banner’ and H.E.R. will be performing ‘America The Beautiful’.
