While the impressive rock lineup of Spencer P Jones and The Nothing Butts – featuring members of The Beasts Of Bourbon, The Scientists, and The Drones – prep to head out on their first and last Australian tour, another Aussie supergroup has emerged from the woodwork and already have their first ever show locked in and ready to go.
The Hillbilly Killers is the name, and bringing together the country’s most esteemed musicians is the game with the 2013 Tamworth Country Music Festival marking the debut performance from the supergroup, featuring Tim Rogers, Bill Chambers, Catherine Britt, Shane O’Mara, James Gillard and Michael Muchow.
Conceived after many “late night conversations about Hank Williams and all things music,” according to their press release, The Hillbilly Killers are touted to be “musical perversity at its best.”
Multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter and all-around Australian country music luminary Bill Chambers got in touch with Newcastle musician Catherine Britt, who roped in the man she’d just finished supporting on his solo national tour – the one and only Tim Rogers, making the leap from his solo career to the country scene.…they’ve also teased the potential of more shows and even recording a debut album.
The trio were then joined by gun guitarist Shane O’Mara, another Rogers associate, and rounded out by genre stalwart James Gillard (who’s played with the likes of Lee Kernaghan, Paul Kelly, and Mondo Rock), as well as Brisbane’s rising star Michael Muchow.
The newly birthed sextet managed to get their schedules to line up, and then “the rabble was complete, the caravan full and it was ready to roll through the wilderness to spread the good word,” starting with next year’s music festival.
The Tamworth Country Music Festival takes place from Friday 18 January to Sunday 27 January, 2013, with over 2,200 events and 4,000 different performances in 80 different venues. The pinnacle of the festival is the CMAA Country Music Awards, where the who’s who of Australian country music gather for the famous Golden Guitar Awards, of which The Hillbilly Killers’ Michael Muchow was a recipient at the ripe age of 18.
While Tamworth marks the new Aussie supergroup’s debut gig, they’ve also teased the potential of more shows and even recording a debut album. Watch this space.
