Tool fans have been given another deep cut during the band’s current live trek, dishing out ‘Swamp Song’ for the first time in 12 years.
If you’re a Tool fan, then you would likely be aware that the band have a stunning amount of songs that very rarely – if ever – get played live on stage.
Sure, you might be really keen to hear tracks like ‘Jerk Off’, ‘Crawl Away’, or ‘Hush’, but you’d have to go back at least 20 years if you wanted to see those classics get a look-in on the setlist.
However, earlier this month, the band’s current tour of the United States saw them bust out ‘Merkaba’, an instrumental track that hadn’t been played since the band hit up Canberra back in 2002.
As the tour has continued, it seems that Tool have been feeling a little bit adventurous with their setlist, adding in more songs that haven’t been heard in years.
Hitting up the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Monday night, the group decided to take a look back at their 1993 debut album, Undertow, by delivering the first performance of ‘Swamp Song’ since 2007.

Famed for its cathartic refrain of “I hope it sucks you down“, the band hadn’t performed the track since a concert in Las Vegas back in 2007. Prior to their 10,000 Days tour though, the tune hadn’t been played live since 2001, indicating it’s one they’ve made the decision to move away from as time has gone on.

Amazingly, fan-shot footage of the performance has been uploaded online, with attendees clearly risking the band’s sweeping “no phones” rule to capture the rare occasion.
In related news, Tool are set to visit Australia for the first time since 2014 in February of 2020. Following overwhelming demand for pre-sale tickets, a second Melbourne date has since been added, ensuring this will be one of the most highly-anticipated tours of the coming year.
