Local rock heroes The Pretty Littles have just dropped their brand new ‘mini album’ titled Gospel.

Gospel is the local follow on from a slew of singles including Tone Deaf favourite ‘Tegan Victoria’, which our Tone Deaf writer called “a fine bloody slice of outsider rock, an anthem that screams with the energy you can only get after you’ve been rejected by your favourite girl one too many times.”

The Melbourne collective have really come far over the past year or so, especially in light of this release. Recorded intermittently over six months with Vasco Era producer Neil Gray, it’s a collection of music that hints at the love for early-to-mid-2000s rock that originally brought the Melbourne outfit’s members together.

It also reveals a matured sense of songwriting and performance that is their own signature creation, to celebrate this  we asked the guys to give us a little track by track run down of the record which you can check out below.

They’ll also be taking Gospel on the road this June and July, don’t miss the guys as they roll into your town – tour dates below.

Dangerman

“This song came together in about five minutes. We just started jamming around thse chords and remember yelling ‘I’m not dangerman!’ or something.

Funny how songs come about. I got to use one of Kurt Cobains actual guitar pedals on this song. Deadset.”

Sinking Feeling

“I remember jamming this song and it not feeling like anything, but then we listened back to the phone recording a little while later and it sounded sick. Haven’t played it for a while now actually. Probably stew dew!”

Tegan Victoria

“This song was for Tegan Victoria who gave us some money to make our last CD. My girlfriend lived in Canberra for a bit so its pretty much just about that.

I tried to make a Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls type rock and roll song. I’m very fond of this one, not sure if anyone else is!”

Ava

“This song is from the Mash recording sessions. We didn’t have time to get it mixed for that album… I’m singing a little differently on it. Its based on a little preface from the podcast This American Life.

Sometimes women in arranged marriages in the 1800s would get crazy depressed because in some instances they would be shipped off to the next town (which might only be 20 miles away).

To get out of the marriage and because suicide was a worse sin that murder, they would kill a kid because theyre ‘pure’ or something and going to heaven anyway. I dunno. Then when they were arrested and tried and sentenced to death they would have a chance to repent their sins and still go to heaven. On ya jebus.”

Man-Baby

“This song had been kicking around for about two years in some form or another… Started off as a reverby rock and roll number and ended up completely different. Funny how songs develop sometimes. Just before we were set to record it I noticed there were two characters voices in the song and a duet would be something interesting to try. Came up so good I reckon. Alice (dix pix) nailed it.”

Local Footy

“Just a sad one about impressionable young men doing what they think is right. Written after that fella in the Otways that died playing football.”

Back Paddock Blues

“My nanna had a pretty bad stroke a few years ago and was just sort of in limbo for a couple of weeks which was pretty hard on everyone coz she was such a strong lady. My anthem for Euthanasia. Conservative fuck heads will be the death of me.”

Religion Is My Favourite

“I saw Local Footy, Back Paddock Blues and this as a package deal of sorts. Theyre heavy little numbers about things that mean a lot to me. Pretty heavy way to finish things off but we didn’t know where else to put it. Organized religion is something I don’t understand. Its just been the cause of so much shit.”
