It’s the perfect time to get acquainted with Perth-based producer Catlips, aka Katie Campbell.
One of the most exciting up-and-coming Australian producers, Catlips crafts technicoloured dance tracks that are equal parts poppy and trippy. Always making sounds that are two trends ahead of the crowd, Catlips has a penchant for making challenging left-field club jams that sound a little bit odd and unexpected, but you’re not exactly sure how or why.
Having just dropped her terrific debut EP Casual just last week, the rising producer walked us through each track to give us an insight into what makes her mind tick.
U1
“A deep tribal journey intended for headphone and club listening. I’ve tried to use a varied set of textures and percussive tones with repetitive vocals to create a hypnotic mood to contrast the driving rhythm.”
Fade
“For me, probably the catchiest song, Fade is intended to be cheeky yet still quite dark. My first time exploring an Alpha Juno1 synth I bought, I went crazy with it.”
Banker
“This tune uses tonnes of samples I recorded on my iphone through my travels last year. Some of the melodic phrases and percussion comes from Istanbul, Amsterdam and New York. I had to race back to my friends apartment whilst in New York to start making this song because I was getting so excited by my surroundings.”
Candycrush
“The foundation of this tune comes from a time when I was using way too much technology and felt myself going ballistic with stress. The beat patterns are very mechanical and furious and was a good way for me to experiment with production tools.”
Primary
“Experimentation was the focus for me in this track. Slipping between frantic changes in instrumentation and rhythm to develop an unsettling yet stable groove in order to evoke certain places and emotions for the listener.”
