Travis Scott’s chart-topping ‘Highest in the Room’ is the subject of a copyright infringement claim. TMZ reports that Scott and his team of writers, producers and engineers are all named in the lawsuit, which was initiated by Danish producer Benjamin Lasnier.
Lasnier claims Scott’s 2019 single incorporates a guitar recording he posted to his Instagram account. Lasnier believes an edited version of the recording appears recurrently throughout the track. He’s not alone in claiming copyright infringement – fellow producers Olivier Bassil and Lukas Benjamin Leth are also listed as plaintiffs.
‘Highest in the Room’ came out in October, 2019 and smashed its way to the top of the US Billboard Hot 100. A remix featuring Rosalía and Lil Baby also enjoyed considerable chart success, making it to the US Rolling Stone Top 20 in January, 2020.
Scott – real name Jacques Webster – is one of four songwriters on the track along with Mike Dean, Nik Frascona and Ozan Yildirim. They’re all named in the suit, along with engineers Sean Solymar and Jimmy Cash. Their respective publishing companies are also listed.
Lasnier says Cash was publicly asking for beats on Instagram in the months prior to the single’s release. “I will just add that our clients are very successful songwriters/producers who, as set forth in the Complaint, and is common practice, corresponded with the defendant writers with an eye toward licensing their work through a collaboration,” said attorney Richard Busch, as Pitchfork reports.
“They never expected that this would end up in a lawsuit but felt they had no choice but to take this action under these circumstances.”
The 20-year-old Lasnier has produced beats for the likes of Tory Lanez, Desiigner, Lil Xan and Don Toliver. He’s also released a number of solo singles dating back to 2014. Lasnier, Bassil and Leth filed the copyright infringement claim via California Central District Court on June 9th, 2020.
