Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross have kicked off the new year with a bang, sharing a brand new track from the soundtrack to Bird Box.
If you’ve been paying any attention to streaming services over the last couple of weeks, you would have undoubtedly heard of Bird Box.
Netflix’s adaptation of Josh Malerman’s 2014 novel of the same name, Bird Box was only released on December 21st, breaking the record for largest seven-day figures, with over 45 million watching it in its first week.
Of course, if you’re a bit more music-minded, you might have noticed that the film’s soundtrack was a little bit familiar.
Yes, composed by Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, the soundtrack is that perfect mix of ambient, post-apocalyptic creepiness, mixed with the unsettling nature that underpins a lot of Nine Inch Nails’ work.
Now, ahead of the soundtrack’s debut on streaming services, Reznor and Ross have shared one of the soundtrack’s most memorable tracks.
Check out the trailer for Netflix’s ‘Bird Box’:
Titled ‘Outside’, the 13-minute-long track is set to feature on the abridged version of the soundtrack, which will hit streaming services on January 25th “or sooner”, as the pair wrote on Nine Inch Nails’ Website.
“Like all soundtrack records we release, we aim for these to play like albums that take you on a journey and can exist as companion pieces to the films and as their own separate works,” the pair explain.
“We created a significant amount of music and conceptual sound for Bird Box, a lot of which never made it to your ears in the final version of the film. We’ve decided to present you with this version of the soundtrack record that represents what Bird Box is to us. We hope you enjoy.”
Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross also explained that they will be releasing a “more expansive (read: more self-indulgent) physical-only offering” of the soundtrack, which will be released in the US spring, and will feature an hour of additional music.
If you’re not too keen on the expanded edition, you can head over to Nine Inch Nails’ website to score a digital copy of the soundtrack now. Otherwise, check out ‘Outside’ below while you wait for it to hit streaming services.
