Some of Australian music’s best and brightest will be coming together next month to honour the life and music of late Sydney musician Luke Liang.

Last month, we learnt the tragic news that Luke Liang, a beloved and prolific musician, had passed away at the age of 28.

Joining Papa vs Pretty as guitarist and keyboardist back in 2013, Luke stayed with the group until their 2014 breakup. Following the group’s dissolution, he moved on to session work, which saw him perform music with some huge names, including Nicole Millar, Guy Sebastian, Japanese Wallpaper, Jack River, and Jarryd James just to name a few.

Now, many of Luke Liang’s closest friends and colleagues are set to come together in a few weeks to pay tribute to his life and legacy with ‘A Bright Light – An Evening For Luke’.

Taking place at Sydney’s Metro Theatre on October 4th, the event will feature performances from Alex The Astronaut, Jarryd James, Montaigne, Thelma Plum, and Jack River, while a special reunion performance from Luke’s bandmates in Papa vs Pretty will also be occurring.

All proceeds event are set to go towards Support Act, in hopes of raising aware of the vital support services that they provide to the music industry.

“The world lost an incredible talent, a kind heart and an unwavering friend,” explained Ball Park Music’s Jen Boyce of Luke’s legacy. “Luke Liang was the finest musician I will ever meet. Everyone he ever came in contact with was warmed by his joyful presence and impressed by his ability to master anything in a matter of hours – seemingly with great ease.”

“New instruments, languages, skateboarding… He even completed a law degree whilst touring. He was unstoppable. While talking about him over the last few days we have come to the conclusion that Lukey was “the ideal human being”.

“For his loved ones, the loss is inconceivable. For everyone who knew him, his passing comes as a huge shock,” Jen continued. “Luke had the biggest, most glorious smile and would always do his best to cheer you up or help you out of a bad situation. He had time for everyone and would drop you a line even if he only had a spare half an hour to catch up. It is so unbelievable to think that such a gorgeous soul could lose his battle with depression.”

“That’s the thing – depression does not discriminate. It’s like cancer. Some are lucky and go into remission, never to face the beast again. Some endure it to varying degrees their whole lives. For others it is a sudden, severe and incurable disease.”

“I’m so sad that he couldn’t see how widely and deeply loved and respected he was. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone in our industry who didn’t know of Luke and his musicianship, kindness and incredible work ethic.”
