Ahead of the American Express Twilight at Taronga Summer Concert Series, Taronga Zoo have announced the concerts will be devoted to their Litter Free Oceans community campaign. This initiative aims to educate the public about reducing the impact of our collective plastic footprint on the ocean, and showcase the efforts Taronga puts into conservation and animal welfare.

Litter Free Oceans focuses on reducing plastic pollution in oceans; because plastic doesn’t break down, it is causing a growing threat to marine life when it enters the oceans through the litter stream.

Whether it’s your takeaway coffee cup, straw at a bar, or takeaway containers, these disposable items may be convenient but are all part of the problem.

Australians use over 2.7 billion straws a year, and only one in five plastic bottles used make it into the recycling stream in Australia.

Check out Taronga’s impact calculator to help you visualise the incredible difference you can make simply by changing a few habits and reduce your impact on the ocean.

As well as educating their guests, Taronga Zoo is making efforts to reduce the plastic waste at the American Express Twilight at Taronga Summer Concert Series. The summer series which features shows from Vera Blue, You Am I, Aloe Blacc, and more will use 100% compostable cutlery, food packaging, and straws – all made from plants, not plastic.

On top on this, Taronga have implemented a unique waste stream that allows all compostable packaging to be turned into compost alongside their animal waste. There will be water refill stations for anyone with a re-usable water bottle and all Twilight Hampers contain no single use plastic items.

The backstage area of the concert series has been ‘single-use plastic free’ since 2015. Twilight at Taronga takes place through February and March 2019. Check out the full line up and ticketing link below.
