You might remember how just a few weeks ago, U2 sent their fans a mysterious letter in the mail which seemed to indicate that something called ‘The Blackout’ was forthcoming. After releasing a video for that one a couple of days back, the band have now performed what has been confirmed as the first single from their forthcoming album.
Hitting up The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night, U2 served as the musical guest, where they treated fans to two performances; their 1987 track ‘Bullet The Blue Sky’, and the new single ‘You’re The Best Thing About Me’.
U2 officially released the new single on Wednesday, and have been playing it live occasionally on their most recent tour, which is celebrating the 30th anniversary of their The Joshua Tree record, but this is the first time that the song has seen a widespread public performance.
U2 also recently announced the release of their fourteenth studio record. Titled Songs Of Experience, the record is self-described by the band as being a continuation of the themes touched upon in their last record, Songs Of Innocence.
In related news, it was recently announced by Pitchfork that English rock juggernaut Royal Blood was set to appear on the new record. Considering that the two bands had crossed paths before, with Royal Blood receiving “sage advice” from U2 frontman Bono, it could make sense that the band’s may collaborate together. However, as NME reports, a spokesman has clarified that this is “incorrect information”, and Royal Blood won’t be appearing on Songs Of Experience.
U2’s Songs Of Experience is expected to be released on December 1st, and there are undoubtedly plenty of fans out there hoping that they don’t wake up on that date to find the record has been downloaded to their iPhones without their consent.
In the meantime, check out U2 playing their new single, ‘You’re The Best Thing About Me’, and ‘Bullet The Blue Sky’, below.
