When the Vans Warped Tour 2013 lineup dropped, with The Offspring and Simple Plan topping the bill for the punk festival’s return to Australia after more than decade, it seemed a little light on Aussie bands.

The 17-strong bill features two domestic groups, namely Byron Bay metalcore band Parkway Drive – given penultimate billing behind The Offspring – and Sydney’s Tonight Alive (who are heading out on a Warped warm-up tour), leaving some to wonder what became of promoter AJ Maddah’s previous claim that Warped would feature “lots of locals.”

It now looks like the answer has arrived, with Warped organisers putting the call out to the public for suggestions of local bands for the 2013 lineup as it rolls around the country this November/December, as FasterLouder points out.

The official Vans Warped Tour AU website notes that organisers are accepting suggestions via email for local acts to join the festival lineup, which Maddah says focusses on “mayhem & DIY punk rock spirit,” when asked to compare Warped to his own Soundwave FestivalWarped organisers putting the call out to the public for suggestions of local bands for the 2013 lineup as it rolls around the country…

So whether you’re a local band or musician that celebrates the same virtues, or simply a fan that wants to see your favourite local group get a leg-up, the Warped Tour hotlines are open.

Maddah, who put together the festival lineup in collaboration with Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman, has also noted that more Australian bands should turn up in “supplementary announcements;”  tweeting to “expect another 4 or 5 internationals as well as a load of locals” to be added to the lineup in the future. Presumably, future additions will also be based on submissions received from fans and bands themselves.

The punk festival has already lost an act, with H2O being pulled from the lineup after a clerical error with advertising materials that saw their name amongst the lineup when Maddah attests they “should not have been on the [advertising] in the 1st place.”

The rest of the Warped lineup features Hatebreed, The Summer Set, We Came As Romans, New Found Glory, who are the only band on the lineup to feature on the last Australian Warped Tour of 2002, as well as The Used, who recently played the South American Warped lineup. ”It’s about time they bring the Warped Tour back down under and we couldn’t be happier to be a part of it,” said The Used frontman Bert McCracken in a recent interview with Tone Deaf.

As for when those second round Warpet Tour announcements, featuring more Aussie bands, will happen, Maddah has tweeted that they’ll come after a second round of acts to be announced for the Massive Attack-headlined Harvest 2013 lineup.
