Cable music station VH1, has been given the chop by parent company MTV which will be replaced in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Ireland by MTV Classic, a new channel format aimed at old farts 25 – 45.

The launch is bumping back the MTV Awards Ceremony in favour of a big bash to launch the station which will show in Oz on the Austar, Foxtel and Optus Pay TV channels.

The new format is threatening to give us a “one-off live music event featuring classic Australian and international acts that have influenced today’s music culture.” So, does that mean Vanessa Amorosi or Tina Arena are going to be called up from their usual gigs on the pokie circuit?
