Ahead of their highly-anticipated upcoming album Situation Room, Melbourne’s alt-rock trio Something For Kate release ‘Waste Our Breath’, which sees the collective playing in the empty Palais Theatre.

Slated for release later this year, Something For Kate have slowly been sharing songs from the new album either in live performances by frontman Paul Dempsey prior to COVID-19, and via the internet as the anticipation mounts for Situation Room – their first album since 2012.

Released only last week, ‘Waste Our Breath’ sees the iconic Australian band dig deep into the state of the world, and how our privacy dwindles as technology advances.

“‘Waste Our Breath’ is a song about trying to find an empty space,” details Dempsey. “It’s about privacy and surveillance and social media and oxygen and George Orwell and how we’re all on TV now.”

The new video accompanying the song was filmed in Melbourne’s Palais Theatre, completely devoid of an audience, which reflects how many concerts are currently held due to the growing pandemic: virtually, and without a crowd.

“The eerie silence of the theatre perfectly reflected the song’s themes of futility – about throwing all your energy at something knowing that it will get you nowhere,” Something For Kate explained. “So what better way to sum that up by performing to 3000 empty seats?”
