Record Store Day is only a month and a half away, and it’s usually a time when some of the worlds greatest musicians get together and do something a bit different and special to help promote local record stores.

This year Mastodon will be celebrating by releasing covers on two separate split vinyls. The first will see the metal band covering a song by Canadian indie-rock vocalist Feist, while the other side contains her returning the favor.

The second split vinyl has Mastodon tackling The Flaming Lips ‘Spoonful Weighs A Ton’ in exchange for The Flaming Lips who will be covering Mastodon’s ‘Black Tongue’ on the b-side.

Have we got your attention yet? So Record Store Day isn’t technically until April 21st, but thanks to the wonders of the internet someone has posted up on Youtube what purports to be a brief sample of Mastodon’s Flaming Lips cover.

We can’t confirm or deny the authenticity of the track, but it sounds pretty legit to us. Besides, it’s probably the best we’ll get until April.

Have a listen to Mastodon’s version of ‘A Spoonful Weighs a Ton’.
